Stand-up paddleboarding resumes this weekend at Tempe Town Lake

PHOENIX — People can once again participate in stand-up paddleboarding at Tempe Town Lake starting this weekend after the activity was restricted just over a week ago, the city said.

Stand-up paddleboarding, along with other activities where there is a likelihood of exposure to water, has not been available since June 8 as testing took place after a seasonal bloom of blue-green algae.

The city said in a press release Friday that the samples are within Environmental Protection Agency safety standards for recreation and that paddle boarders could return starting Saturday morning.

Kayaking, outrigger canoeing, rowing, sailing, dragon boating, pedal boats and catch and release fishing were not affected.

The city previously said blue-green algae blooms are very common as the lake’s ecosystem can be disrupted during significant weather changes.

With the monsoon season underway, the city advises people to check the weather before heading out for any kind of boating as strong winds, rain and lightning can occur quickly.
