Maricopa County experiences dust storms, heavy winds

PHOENIX — The National Weather Service in Phoenix issued a dust advisory for Maricopa County Saturday, which was in effect until 6:30 p.m.

The advisory was initially set through 5:30 p.m. and was extended until 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The Service warns of wind gusts and reduced visibilities below one mile.

Heavy winds are being felt throughout south central Arizona, with gusts up to 50 miles per hour in Wickenburg, Wittmann and Morristown, according to the NWS Phoenix.

The NWS alerted that thunderstorms will develop Saturday across portions of La Paz and northwestern Maricopa Counties, which will bring dust storms.

The Service warns drivers that encounter dense blowing dust to pull over to the side.

The storms are amid a high temperature of 114 degrees at Sky Harbor, which ties the previous record high last set in 1918.
