Westbound US 60 reopens in Tempe after weekslong repair work

PHOENIX – Traffic returned to westbound U.S. 60 in Tempe on Sunday night, after a closure to repair damage caused by a water main break.

The Arizona Department of Transportation reopened the roadway between McClintock Drive and Loop 101 Price Freeway around 10 p.m.

The eastbound U.S. 60 off-ramp at McClintock Drive was also reopened.

The shutdown began May 7 when 8 million gallons of water flooded a 2-mile section of freeway. Both sides of the road were shut down to begin work.

Once Tempe workers fixed the water line, contractors began the rebuild.

Concrete paving, lane striping and other work was finished over the weekend, Tempe said in an email.

Eastbound lanes were back in use May 15.

The East Valley city has not said how much the repairs cost, but Mark Weber, interim deputy municipal utilities director, said recently, “It’s going to be significant.”
