PHOENIX — A 20-year-old man was arrested Friday night in connection to a fatal shooting that took place at a Circle K in Mesa last month, authorities said.

Adam Gomez was found on Main Street and Country Club Drive around 9 p.m., more than two weeks after the shooting of 30-year-old Jose Gutierrez took place, police said in a press release.

He was booked on one count of second degree murder, armed robbery and prohibited possessor, the Mesa Police Department said in the release.

Gomez was identified as a “person of interest” after witnesses saw Gomez fleeing from the gas station at McKellips and Gilbert roads around 3:30 a.m. on April 27, according to police.

An investigation determined Gomez, Gutierrez and a woman arrived at the gas station in a truck, and an altercation broke out inside the vehicle shortly after the arrival.

Gomez exited the truck, pointed a gun at a bystander in his car, and fled the scene, according to police.

During his interview with police, he said he shot Gutierrez after an argument, admitted what he did was wrong and said he was under the influence of drugs at the time the shooting occurred, according to a probable cause statement.
