Phoenix man apparently shot 6-year-old son before taking own life

PHOENIX – A Phoenix man apparently shot and wounded his 6-year-old son before taking his own life after a family fight on Sunday morning, authorities said.

Officers responded to a home near 24th Street and Cactus Road around 9:30 a.m. and found 53-year-old Amir Vetry and the boy with gunshot wounds, the Phoenix Police Department said Monday in a press release.

Police said the child’s mother was attempting to pick him up Sunday morning and got into a physical altercation with 53-year-old Amir Vetry outside the home.

The woman got away and ran toward witnesses on the street. Gunshots then rang out from inside the house, police said.

Officers who responded found the injured boy inside the house and took him to safety. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and is expected to survive.

Officers then found Vetry with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and a gun next to him. He was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.

Police said there were no outstanding suspects. The investigation remains active.
