Driver accused of hitting 100 mph in Mesa street wreck that killed 2

PHOENIX – A driver police said was going over 100 mph on a Mesa street has been arrested and booked on murder charges after two people died in a car crash, authorities said Wednesday.

Gezane Izreal Cabanillas-Lape, 21, was taken into custody and faces two counts of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault, the Mesa Police Department said in a press release.

Police said Cabanillas-Lape was driving a Chrysler 300C when it collided with 80-year-old Irma Hettich’s Chrysler Pacifica near Main Street and Lindsay Road around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

First responders pronounced Hettich’s husband, 82-year-old Ronald Hettich, who was sitting in the passenger seat, dead at the scene.

Irma Hettich suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where she died.

A 21-year-old woman riding with Cabanillas-Lape was also injured, while his injuries weren’t serious, police said.

Police said the Hettiches were heading north on Windsor when Cabanillas-Lape smashed into them coming from the west on Main Street.
