Arizona man sentenced to 19 years in prison for killing a Navajo woman in 2018

PHOENIX — An Arizona man was sentenced on Thursday to 19 years in prison for shooting and killing a woman on Navajo Nation in 2018.

Sito Nalwood, 33, of Chinle, formerly pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after he shot a woman in the pelvis, which ultimately killed her.

Nalwood attempted to steal a bag from a woman, a member of the Navajo Nation whose named has not been released, on July 26, 2018, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona said in a press release.

After the victim refused, he fired shots around her, one striking her.

Authorities said at the time of the shooting, Nalwood was serving a supervised release that had been imposed from conviction of a previous assault.

He was sentenced 15 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, as well as four additional years for doing that crime while on supervised release.
