Metro Phoenix to high-jump to near 90 degrees this week

PHOENIX – A short-lived warmup will spread sunshine across metro Phoenix, with a midweek forecast nearing 90 degrees as the calendar flips to March.

“A very small shot at 90 degrees this week … but Wednesday [could be] 87, possibly 88,” Chris Kuhlman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

He added there was only a 10% chance, if that, of hitting 90 degrees.

But at least four days will reach 80 and beyond, starting Monday with a high of 80-81, followed by 84 degrees Tuesday. The mid-80s theme is likely to stick around Friday with another 84 before dropping off to 73 on Friday.

The mild heating isn’t unusual in the Valley this time of year but the average first day for 90 degrees is March 31, according to weather service data.

This week’s temperatures, “Aren’t even really close to our record highs, which were in the low 90s,” Kuhlman said.

Last year, the Valley didn’t reach 90 until April 1.
