Justice Montgomery to lead task force reviewing roles of Arizona public attorneys

PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court announced on Wednesday Justice William Montgomery will oversee a task force created to review the roles and responsibilities of the State Attorney General and other public attorneys.

The task force will examine the state’s public attorneys statutory responsibilities starting in March regarding the representation of their clients, according to an Arizona Supreme Court press release.

“This has been an issue for a number of years and it’s time we take a serious look at addressing potential conflicts for public attorneys,” Chief Justice Robert Brutinel said in the release. “We look forward to reviewing recommendations by the task force.”

Among the priorities for the task group are describing conflicts an attorney general or county attorney may have under the current ethics rules, as well as reviewing rules adopted by other states to govern the conduct of similarly situated government officials, the release said.

If changes to ethic rules are determined to be necessary, the task force will recommend amendments.

A written report will be given to the court by December 2022.
