Hourslong standoff with armed man in Surprise ends in his surrender

PHOENIX – An hourslong standoff in Surprise ended Tuesday evening with the surrender of an armed, barricaded suspect who had thrown rocks at police.

The Surprise Police Department said in an email the man they arrested had been waving a knife and yelling at traffic near Greenway and Beardsley roads starting around 8 a.m.

A witness called police, a department spokesman said.

When officers reached the scene, the man began throwing rocks at them before running into his house.

Police said a team began negotiations with the man, whose name was not released.

At one point, the man stopped responding to the negotiators and ignored their instructions, police said.

Eventually, the man was taken into custody without any other trouble, police said.

ABC15 reported the standoff ended around 8 p.m.

No other details were made available.
