Head-on collision backs up traffic for hours on I-10 south of Phoenix

PHOENIX – Traffic into the Phoenix area from the south was backed up for hours Monday morning after a head-on collision on Interstate 10, authorities said.

Westbound I-10 was closed before 6 a.m. at milepost 170, before Riggs Road, the Arizona Department of Transportation said. The closure was lifted around 9:45 a.m.

Two people were hospitalized in critical condition after the crash, which was caused by a vehicle crossing the median, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
