PHOENIX – A man accused of stabbing his girlfriend dozens of times over the weekend at a West Valley residence was arrested for attempted murder, authorities said.

Raymond Maltos, 27, allegedly told police he was taken over by a “violent rage” and thought he was dreaming during the attack in the area of Waddell Road and Bullard Avenue in Surprise, according to court documents.

Maltos contacted police around 8 p.m. Sunday to report that his girlfriend had been stabbed about 30 times, according to the probable cause statement.

The victim was taken to a hospital with large cuts on her legs and multiple fractures, including on her head and hand, police said.

After being read his rights, Maltos allegedly told police that two knives broke during the attack and he started using a third when he realized what was happening and stopped to render aid.

He also allegedly said the altercation started because his girlfriend was belittling him and being rude. When he asked her why she was acting that way, she responded, “Boo hoo,” according to the probable cause statement.

“In that instant, Raymond advised of a violent rage taking over him which he believed to be a dream,” the probable cause statement says.

Maltos was booked on one count each of attempted murder, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and endangerment, all felonies.

Bail was set at $250,000. A status conference on the case was set for Monday, followed by a preliminary hearing two days later.
