Completed Phoenix project adds bike lanes on Third, Fifth avenues

PHOENIX — Phoenix city councilwoman Yassamin Ansari joined city staff and members of the community to celebrate the completion of Third and Fifth Avenues Improvement Project on Friday.

The project was created to increase safety with added bike facilities, including a two-way lane, according to the city of Phoenix’s website.

Other aspects include pedestrian and bicycle improvements, shade structures, drainage modifications and pavement resurfacing.

The two-way cycle track goes from Roosevelt Street to McDowell Road on Third Avenue. Shade structures were also added to this stretch.

On Fifth Avenue from Washington to Van Buren streets, there are traffic signal upgrades and landscape improvements.

The city also completed improvements of traffic signals, landscaping, street parking and traditional bike lanes on 5th Avenue between Van Buren and Roosevelt streets.

Ansari tweeted on Friday that there will be a public meeting on Tuesday to discuss adding more protected bike lanes on Fillmore Street from Central Avenue to 7th Street.

The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is proposing the removal two driving lanes in order to add buffered bike lanes.
