1 injured, suspect outstanding in shooting at Cesar Chavez High School in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A teen boy was injured and a suspect was outstanding following a shooting at Cesar Chavez High School in Phoenix on Monday, authorities said.

The teen’s injuries were non-life-threatening, Phoenix Police Sgt. Ann Justus said in a press conference.

Justus said it wasn’t an active shooter incident.

Officers safely cleared the campus, located near Baseline Road and 41st Avenue, of the remaining students.

Justus said the teen, who is a student at the school and believed to be 16 years old, was shot during an altercation that occurred in one of the bathrooms just after the school day ended.

It isn’t known whether the suspect is also a student at the school, and Justus said the age of the suspect is somewhere between the ages of 16 and 25.

The Phoenix Union High School District in a statement said the school would follow the regular bell schedule on Tuesday since it is believed the shooting was an isolated incident.

The district said increased safety and support protocols would be in effect beginning Tuesday until further notice, including backpacks not being allowed and limited entry and exit points on campus.

Extra safety personnel, including law enforcement, will also be highly visible on campus.
