How soon is too soon when it comes to political campaign signs?
City of Phoenix officials said it is still too early to place signs in the public right-of-way.
PHOENIX — While political campaign signs are already popping up around Phoenix, the city’s Planning and Development Department is reminding residents and campaigners it is still too early to place signs in the public right-of-way.
“The city ordinance allows for campaign signs to be placed in the public right-of-way sixty days before an election,” Phoenix Planning and Development Director Alan Stephenson said. “In this case, the upcoming (city council) election is August 25.”
While there are no time restrictions regarding how early political campaign signs can or cannot be placed on private property, Stephenson said it important campaigns follow the rules for public property.
“(Until June 25), they should find appropriate private property parcels and place their signs up there and then once within the sixty days they can erect their signs in the public right-of-way,” he said.
Some city council campaign signs have already been found in violation of the city ordinance, according to Stephenson.
“We have called some campaigns and asked them to move their signs and got them to move signs,” he said. “If they haven’t moved them, we have taken a couple down.”
