Mesa to launch free app service for visually impaired

PHOENIX — Mesa will launch an app service later this week that will provide assistance for people who are blind or have low vision.

Mesa’s partnership with on-demand visual interpretation service Aira will allow users to utilize the app to guide them through public buildings, restaurants, hotels and other spaces.

People who download the app will also be able to get help from an Aira agent with trip planning.

The service will launch in the East Valley city on Friday, which is National Blind Americans Equality Day.

“We want residents and visitors alike to know that Mesa is committed to inclusivity and accessibility, and the availability of Aira is another step in the right direction,” Mayor John Giles said in a press release.

“Visit Mesa has become a leader in our region in putting tools like Aira to work to create greater ease for both guests and residents.”

Aira will be free inside city limits and will remain complimentary for five minutes outside of Mesa before fees apply.

The service is also available nationwide in Starbucks and Target stores.

“We are thrilled to welcome Visit Mesa as an Aira Access partner,” Aira CEO Troy Otillio said in the release. “Their commitment to providing an accessible, independent visitor experience for the blind and low vision community is another example of their mission to provide never-ending inspiration and discovery.”
