PHOENIX – Arizona State University maintained its spot as the nation’s most innovative university, but the University of Arizona got the nod as the state’s best overall college in the U.S. News and World Report rankings for 2022, which were released Monday.

ASU has been No. 1 in innovation for the each of the seven years the website has compiled rankings in the category.

U.S. News and World Report asks college officials to submit up to 15 nominations of universities they think are “making the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities.”

The schools nominated the most times wind up highest on the innovation list, according to the methodology.

For the overall list, UArizona checked in at No. 103 this year, down from No. 97 a year ago. ASU was next in the state at No. 117, down from No. 103.

Northern Arizona University, at No. 288, was the state’s only other school in the top 300 nationally.

This is the 37th year of the U.S. News and World Report college rankings. More than 1,400 institutions were assessed for 2022 in 17 areas of academic quality, and those results were plugged into a formula to produce the final list.

Princeton maintained its No. 1 spot, with Harvard, MIT and Columbia in a three-way tie for second and Yale rounding out the top five.
