PHOENIX – Police in Mesa fired their weapons at a home before a man inside who reportedly was armed surrendered Tuesday, authorities said.

The unidentified man was not injured during the confrontation near Ellsworth and Warner roads around 7:45 p.m., a spokesman for the Mesa Police Department said early Wednesday.

Police said they received an emergency call about a domestic dispute and were told the man at the house had been drinking, was armed and making threats.

When officers arrived, the man’s wife met them outside. She said the couple’s 2-year-old was upstairs in a bedroom and that her husband was inside with a rifle.

“Officers moved to position around the house and that’s when the officer involved shooting occurred,” police said in a press release.

The man eventually complied with commands to come out of the house and was taken into custody, police said.

The mother and toddler were safely reunited, police said.

No other details were immediately available.

It was the fifth shooting of the year involving Mesa police and 34th overall in the Valley by law enforcement, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
