Boater dies after falling into Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park

PHOENIX — A 63-year-old man died Monday after falling into the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park during a private boating trip, authorities said.

James Crocker of Lakewood, Colorado, entered the river at the top of Hance Rapid.

Members of his boating group said Crocker was unresponsive when they pulled him out of the water and they began CPR.

Park officials who arrived on the scene after being alerted to a personal locator beacon activation also unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate the man.

The incident occurred on the sixth day of Crocker’s multi-day boating trip, park officials said.

The National Park Service will investigate the incident and the Coconino County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

Grand Canyon National Park encompasses 277 miles of the Colorado River.
