We all want to save money -- especially in this economy -- but there are times where it actually can end up costing you more if you take the cheap route.

We all want to save money — especially in this economy — but there are times where it actually can end up costing you more if you take the cheap route.
According to the Detroit Free Press, it may seem counterintuitive, but spending a little bit more upfront can really pay off in the end.
While some of these scenarios may seem pretty obvious — here’s looking at you, do-it-yourself guy who causes thousands in other repairs — others took us by surprise.
What seems like a great idea to save at first can cost you, such as buying too much disposable food in bulk or driving out of your way to save on gas. Most of the time it’s best to buy things that will keep for a while or swing by the gas station on your way home.
Things like eating cheap food, buying cheap clothes, shoes and mattresses and skipping doctor’s visits (or veterinarians for pets) can also end up costing you extra in the end.
The biggest surprise on the list for us was buying daily deals. We’ve all bought that Groupon we’ve never used, but we never realized how much it could cost us.
