Boys’ ‘impure thoughts’ ban 12-year-old girl from playing football
Being gay might not be that big of a deal in professional sports nowadays, but in Locust Grove, Ga., being a girl that plays sports is still a big no-no.
TODAY reports that Madison Baxter, a 12-year-old girl who goes to Strong Rock Christian School has been banned from playing one of America’s toughest sports for several reasons, one of them being that boys might have “impure thoughts.”
“I sat there in silence for 10 minutes just thinking,” Maddy told TODAY.com. “I feel that it’s completely wrong.”
Maddy’s mother, Cassy Blythe, was also in disbelief.
“It was such a shocking moment,” Blythe said of last week’s meeting. “She deserves to be there, she earned her spot, she worked out, she’s obsessed with this sport.”
The ordeal didn’t end there, and so Maddy and her mother decided to fight back.
They began a Facebook page called Let her play as a form of support not only for Maddy, but for other girls around the country that might be going through the same thing as her.
TODAY says that the page has gotten more than 30,000 likes on Facebook and support has been coming from all over the world, including male football coaches and military personnel.
Regarding the comments made by the school, Maddy says she doesn’t understand any of them.
“I just thought, OK, I don’t think you know my
friends very well. They are really good kids,” she said. And, she added with a laugh, even if they might develop a crush, she’s probably not their first choice. “I know that we’re growing up, but honestly wouldn’t those thoughts mainly be directed to the cheerleaders – not someone who is in full pads?”
