No more trash-talk in New Jersey high school sports

A new initiative against bullying is taking place in the sports fields all over New Jersey.

An article by the New York Post reports:

A new policy that would penalize teams and players for trash talk. An athlete could even find himself investigated by the state Civil Rights Division if he goes too far on the field or court.

The policy, crafted by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Association along with the state Attorney General’s office, would include “harassing statements” from anything like sexual orientation to religion.

But is that going a bit too far?

Boys basketball coach Lawrence Pollard thinks so.

“You would see a lot of technicals, a lot of ejections, because one thing about New York is there’s a lot of friendly rivalries, so many schools close together and guys living in the same neighborhoods and projects.”
