‘Sesame Street’ teaching children to cope with jailed parents

Besides teaching your children the ABCs, Big Bird, Elmo and Oscar the Grouch are going to teach your child how to cope when daddy or mommy goes to jail.

Besides teaching your children the ABCs, Big Bird, Elmo and Oscar the Grouch are going to teach your child how to cope when daddy or mommy goes to jail.

According to The Daily Mail, the happiest street in TV history launched its “Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration” educational program earlier this week.

The program is being targeted to children ages 3- to 8-years-old. Why? Because the U.S. has the highest rate of incarcerations compared to everyone else.

Here’s a statement from Sesame Street:

The incarceration of a loved one can be very overwhelming for both children and caregivers,’ reads a message on the website. ‘Here are some tools to help you with the changes your child is going through.’

Some of these tools come in the form of advice to children, for example: “How to prepare your child visiting a parent in prison,” or “How to explain the situation to your peers.”
