Officials seek owners of $45M in unclaimed property in metro Phoenix

PHOENIX – Arizona officials are trying to find the rightful owners of around $45 million in unclaimed property in metro Phoenix.

The assets from old bank accounts, safe deposit boxes and other sources belong to more than 159,000 people with last known addresses in Maricopa County, the Arizona Department of Revenue said in a press release Friday.

The unclaimed funds can also include uncashed payroll checks, tax refunds, credit balances, rebates and returned deposits.

The largest single amount is nearly $600,000, according to the release.

Property often becomes unclaimed when company holding the funds has an outdated or incorrect address on file for a customer. It also can happen when the property owner dies and the family isn’t aware of the asset.

To find out if you have an unexpected windfall, visit the unclaimed property section of the ADOR website and search for your name.

Claimants must submit a completed form along with ID and documentation that the claim is legally valid.

In the last fiscal year, the department’s unclaimed property program returned $42.5 million to its rightful owners, according to the release.
