Phoenix police arrest 7 people following Black Lives Matter protest

PHOENIX — Seven people were arrested following protests in downtown Phoenix on Saturday night, including leaders of Black Lives Matter Phoenix Metro.

Black Lives Matter Phoenix Metro and partner organization held a demonstration against police brutality at City Hall.

The group said in a statement on Twitter that as organizers were attempting to make sure those who were in attendance left safely, they were “ambushed” by the police.

“We’re asking out communities to show up and take action for the release of all protesters who were targeted, surveilled and arrested while driving home,” the group said.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said the arrests happened Saturday after a group of protesters who were marching in Phoenix began blocking traffic.

Fortune said protesters were warned repeatedly to stop blocking traffic.

Police said the protesters were arrested on multiple charges, including obstructing a public thoroughfare, hindering prosecution, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, weapons violation and aggravated assault.

All of the suspects were booked into Maricopa County jail.
