Driver crashes into Tempe police vehicle, charged with DUI

PHOENIX – A suspected impaired driver crashed into a Tempe police vehicle Thursday night during a traffic stop.

There were no reports of serious injuries at the accident on Elliot Road near Interstate 10.

Sgt. Greg Bacon said in an email that an officer had stopped at the curb around 10 p.m., to talk with someone. Emergency lights on the fully marked SUV were flashing.

Shortly after the officer got out of the vehicle, a passenger car ran into the back of the unit.

The driver was arrested and charged with DUI.

No other details were immediately available.
