Arizona man apparently drowns in Salt River after jumping in off rocks

PHOENIX – A young Arizona man apparently drowned in the Salt River on Monday afternoon after jumping in from rocks, authorities said.

At around 3:30 p.m., a 911 caller told the Gila County Sheriff’s Department that man hadn’t resurfaced after jumping into the water at the Salt River Diversion Dam Intake east of Roosevelt Lake.

About an hour later, rescue teams recovered the body of Gabriel Carl Monroe Fletcher, a 19-year-old from Globe, according to a press release by the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.

The Tonto Rim Search and Rescue swift water team and the Tri-City Fire District took part in the rescue efforts along with sheriff’s department personnel.

No other details were immediately available.
