Eastmark High School students possibly exposed to coronavirus

PHOENIX — Students at Eastmark High School were possibly exposed to a person with coronavirus last week, school officials said in a letter to families on Monday.

The school’s administration said students might have been exposed to a person with COVID-19 if they were on campus Aug. 26 or 27.

Officials were notified Aug. 30 of the positive case and immediately contacted the Maricopa County Department of Public Health who conducted an investigation.

Under direction from MCDPH, there was no information about the individual case made available, but the school has contacted anyone who might have been exposed.

“Maricopa County Public Health does not release information regarding open (or possible) outbreaks as they are under investigation,” MCDPH said in a statement to KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday.

The school said they are following the recommendations from public health to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Eastmark is part of the Queen Creek Unified District. The district began offering some in-person learning options Aug. 17, the first day schools were allowed to do so under an order from Gov. Doug Ducey.

Most Arizona schools have been operating with virtual-only learning to start the academic year.

On Tuesday, Arizona health officials reported 507 new coronavirus cases and 15 deaths, bringing the state’s totals to 202,342 infections and 5,044 deaths.
