PHOENIX — The Phoenix Art Museum announced Wednesday its intention to reopen the facility to visitors in October.

The museum aims to open to members on Oct. 1 and the general public on Oct. 14, according to a press release.

Museum leadership will continue to meet throughout the summer to tailor their fall plans in accordance with recommendations of public health officials.

New safety protocols and operational changes that will be enforced to limit the spread of the coronavirus include: a maximum number of daily visitors, required face coverings for visitors and staff, designated hours for senior citizens, enhanced disinfection practices and encouraging visitors to purchase tickets in advance.

“Phoenix Art Museum seeks to balance its mission of providing access to arts and educational programming with its commitment to public health and safety amidst the pandemic,” Phoenix Art Museum Director Timothy Rodgers said in the release.

” … The Museum will remain closed for now and will continue to increase its digital engagement activities through our weekly Virtual Visits, our bilingual museum blog, our comprehensive website and social media channels, and new virtual gallery tours, lectures, and educational events that deliver access to our collection in safe yet meaningful ways.”

Upon reopening, the museum will apply a three-month extension of benefits to anyone with a current membership — including those that were set to expire during the closure.

Some exhibitions affected by the closure are also set to be extended, including Teresita Fernández: Elemental, India: Fashion’s Muse and Ansel Adams: Performing the Print.

The museum first canceled events and tours in response to the COVID-19 pandemic March 13.

We want to hear from you.
