PHOENIX — The Tempe Police Department has identified the seven suspects who were arrested in connection to protest activity that occurred near Scottsdale Road and Playa Del Norte Drive Monday night.

On Tuesday, authorities made public the names and photographs of those arrested, along with the charges each face:

  • Darien Barrett — charged with obstructing public thoroughfare and hindering and interfering with police
  • Alexandra Rodriguez — charged with assault and disorderly conduct
  • Richard Villa — charged with obstructing public thoroughfare and hindering and interfering with police
  • Nolan Williams — charged with obstructing public thoroughfare and hindering and interfering with police
  • Elisabeth Carpenter — charged with obstructing public thoroughfare and hindering and interfering with police
  • Vanessa Bracken — charged with obstructing public thoroughfare, hindering and interfering with police and resisting arrest (passive)
  • Jacob Pacheco — charged with obstructing public thoroughfare and aggravated assault against police

The ages of the suspects were not immediately available.

The march began at 5 p.m. at Tempe Beach Park Amphitheatre in memory of Dion Johnson and Dalvin Hollins.

Johnson was fatally shot and killed by an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper on May 25 — the same day as Minnesotan George Floyd died in police custody — while Hollins was shot and killed by a Tempe police officer in 2016.

Around 6 p.m., Tempe police asked all demonstrators to remain on sidewalks and within marked crosswalks pursuant to Arizona Revised Statue 28-646B, which prohibits loitering in unauthorized crosswalks.

Just before 8 p.m., police confirmed demonstrators had “taken” Scottsdale Road at Playa Del Norte Drive and had been warned to disperse.

Around 8:30 p.m., protesters had gathered to form a line at the intersection Rio Salado Parkway and Packard Drive before the arrests were made.

Video circulating on social media appeared to capture the arrest of Barrett around 8:50 p.m.

Organizers have planned to gather at City Hall in Phoenix at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for another night of demonstrations.

We want to hear from you.
