Metro Phoenix protesters march for 18th consecutive day

PHOENIX — Protesters in Metro Phoenix took to the streets for the 18th consecutive day on Sunday.

Sunday morning, The W.E. Rising Project announced the march to defund the police and reinvest in education would begin at 5:50 p.m. outside of City Hall.

The march was scheduled to end by 8 p.m.

Saturday morning, kids could be seen protesting by the police museum on Jefferson Street.

They also gave speeches to the crowd prior to the beginning of the march.

Local organizers have been leading protests against police brutality and racial inequality in Phoenix and across the Valley in the wake of Dion Johnson’s in-custody death in Phoenix and George Floyd’s in-custody death in Minnesota.

On Thursday, protesters gathered in Tempe to march to City Hall where council members were scheduled to vote on Tempe’s annual budget. Later that night, the vote was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

On Monday, the Phoenix City Council passed its annual budget, which included $3 million in funding for a police oversight board.

Phoenix police have made zero arrests in connection to demonstrations since May 31.
