St. Mary’s Food Bank to donate record amount of food to Navajo Nation

PHOENIX — St. Mary’s Food Bank will be making the largest single-day distribution in its history on Friday to aid the Navajo Nation during the coronavirus outbreak.

A total of five semi-trucks will be required to transport the 125,000 pounds of food to the Western Navajo Nation Fairgrounds in Tuba City from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a press release.

Over 2,500 families are expected to participate and take home more than 50 pounds of food.

Each family will receive an emergency food box (canned goods), produce box (vegetables and potatoes) and a mixed-dairy box, with the goal being to provide meals that can be prepared at home.

St. Mary’s Food Bank did a similar donation in April that resulted in cars being lined up for over five miles long prior to opening.

On Tuesday, Navajo Nation reports confirmed coronavirus cases to have reached 4,153 total while approximately 1,001 individuals are said to have recovered from the virus.

The Navajo Nation now has the highest per-capita rate of COVID-19 infections in the U.S., according to CNN.
