Child in critical condition after being shot in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A boy is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries after being shot in Phoenix on Wednesday afternoon.

A four-year-old boy was shot with a handgun in the area of 4100 E McDowell Road around 4:30 p.m while playing outside, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

“There was a four-year-old boy, a 15-year-old and an adult male in that residence,” Phoenix Police Sergeant Maggie Cox told reporters. “Preliminary information is the child was playing and the 15-year-old and the adult were handling the gun.

“We don’t know exactly if they were going to unload it… we do know that the adult maybe had left, came back, heard a shot, came out and found the child had been injured by the hand gun.”

The adult immediately drove the boy to the hospital, calling 911 on the way.

Both the 15-year-old and adult are being questioned by police, according to authorities.

The area where the shooting occurred was shut down for further investigation, Cox said.

It’s unknown at this time whose gun it was.

Police have not identified any of those involved in the incident.
