McCain Institute names former US ambassador as new executive director

PHOENIX – The McCain Institute for International Leadership announced its new executive director on Thursday.

Former Ambassador Mark Green will take over as the executive director of the Arizona State Washington D.C. leadership on April 20.

“Ambassador Green’s selection continues our unwavering commitment to securing the absolute best talent available,” ASU President Michael Crow said in a press release. “His leadership style, vision and global success match up superbly with the ASU charter.”

The institute was formerly headed by Kurt Volker, who stepped down from his position in October, the same time he resigned as special envoy to Ukraine amid the presidential impeachment proceedings.

Since then, Nick Rasmussen has been the interim executive director.

He’ll continue at the institute as senior program director of national security and counterterrorism.

“At USAID, I helped strengthen our humanitarian and global development tools,” Green said in the release. “At the McCain Institute, I’ll have an opportunity to reinforce the leadership needed to use these and other tools at a critical moment in our history.”

Green was previously the administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development since August 2017. Prior to that, he headed the International Republican Institute as an ambassador to Tanzania from 2007 to 2009.

He also served as a U.S. House representative for Wisconsin for four terms.

The McCain Institute was established in 2012 and named after U.S. Sen. John McCain and his family.
