Camelback Mountain closed after hiker pinned underneath boulder

PHOENIX — Camelback Mountain has been closed until further notice after a hiker was rescued from under an approximate 300-pound boulder.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, the hiker was on the Cholla Trail on Saturday morning when he stopped to let other hikers pass by.

He was leaning into a boulder to stabilize himself and physically pulled it on top of him.

The hiker was rescued with tools commonly used for somebody trapped in a collapsed building or pinned under a car.

He was flown via helicopter to the Echo Canyon landing area where he was transported to the hospital with extensive lower body injuries.
