Goodyear police shoot armed suspect after brief foot chase

PHOENIX – Police in Goodyear shot a man they said was trying to get inside of a woman’s apartment early Thursday.

The suspect had shoved an officer and run from an apartment complex near Dysart Road and Van Buren Street around midnight, police said in an email.

Officers were called to the complex after a call about suspicious activity. They said Malaki Cox, 23, showed a gun while he was running away.

An officer then fired and hit Cox. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition and expected to recover.

No officers were injured.

During the investigation, police learned Cox had had a relationship with the woman who lived in the apartment.

It was the department’s second shooting of the year.
