ASU begins construction on new downtown Phoenix residence hall

PHOENIX — Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix campus is about to get more student housing.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, ASU President Michael Crow, members of Capstone Development Partners and university and city staff gathered on Monday for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the campus’ new Residence Hall and Entrepreneurship Center.

The new building will feature academic and entrepreneurial space on the first three floors, while the remaining space will be utilized as student housing.

“What people will experience in this building is the fusion of living, learning and creating all in one place,” Crow said in a press release.

“Not only will this residence hall answer our need for additional housing for our downtown Phoenix campus, it will provide space for co-working, events, exhibitions and involving not only our entire downtown campus community, but the broader community, as well.”

ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus is currently unable to house all of its students, forcing the university to accommodate by leasing off-campus apartments.

The demand for the downtown campus’ new living space is also being fueled by next year’s opening of the Thunderbird School of Global Management and the planned influx of several programs to be transferred from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.

The 284,000 square-foot building will provide 532 new beds for students.

ASU “has transformed our downtown in its physical presence, its energy, and its influence on lifestyle,” Gallego said in the release.

“We need more options for students to live and we encourage the university’s investment in providing space for ideas to be shared not only with faculty and students, but with residents and businesses in downtown and across the city.”

The Residence Hall and Entrepreneurship Center is scheduled to be completed in fall 2021.
