PHOENIX – A caregiver at Mesa assisted living facility has been accused of raping an 85-year-old dementia patient, authorities said.

Manuel Corral, 58, who worked nights at Heritage Village, allegedly committed multiple sexual acts on the woman, according to court documents.

The victim told the facility’s staff about what happened, and the staff contacted her son. After speaking to his mother, the son reported the incident to the Mesa Police Department on Sunday.

Police arrested Corral that night and booked him on six counts of sexual assault and one count each of kidnapping and sexual abuse, all felonies.

According to the police probable cause statement, he admitted to engaging in sexual activity with the victim.

The victim suffered injuries consistent with her allegations, police said.

Corral was the only person working in the victim’s unit when the offenses allegedly occurred, police said.

Corral, who’d been working at Heritage Village since June 2019, had been the subject of three previous abuse investigations at adult care facilities, police said.
