City of Phoenix breaks ground on mixed-income housing development

PHOENIX — The city of Phoenix broke ground Monday on a mixed-income housing development that is scheduled to open in 2021.

Soluna will feature 177 units and amenities that include community rooms, playgrounds, a computer lab and a fitness center, according to a press release.

The development is located in the Edison-Eastlake neighborhood, which is situated along Interstate 10 between 16th Street and the Union Pacific Railroad in central Phoenix.

Soluna will be the first units developed by Choice Neighborhoods, which received a $30 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to revitalize the Edison-Eastlake neighborhood.

“It is fitting that a historic neighborhood such as Edison-Eastlake will be the home for innovative new housing units,” Mayor Kate Gallego said in the release.

“These new mixed-income units not only provide more modern amenities to residents, they offer a sense of place with added resources to promote community.”

The city of Phoenix plans to demolish more than 500 public housing units and construct more than 1,000 mixed-income housing units over the next five years.

The city also plans to provide supportive services for residents and improve parks in the neighborhood.

“Today’s Soluna groundbreaking is another positive step towards building an inclusive city, where all residents have safe, convenient housing,” Councilman Carlos Garcia said in the release. “Having affordable housing for all Phoenicians is a goal that I will continue to work towards making a reality.”
