Phoenix school temporarily placed on lockdown for suspect on roof

PHOENIX – A Phoenix private school was temporarily placed on lockdown Wednesday while police pursued a burglary suspect on campus, authorities said.

Police responded to the area of Indian School Road and 17th Avenue around 7 a.m. When they arrived, the suspect was on the roof of a Phoenix Christian Preparatory School building.

The school was placed on lockdown while officers attempted to apprehend the man, police said.

The suspect was uncooperative, and officers used nonlethal force to take him into custody around 8:30 a.m., police said.

The lockdown was lifted after the arrest was made.

The Phoenix Fire Department said it was treating an adult male who was in police custody at the K-12 school, which was previously known as Phoenix Christian High School.

The man, who is not a student, suffered injuries that were not life threatening, authorities said. It was unclear if he would be hospitalized.

No other injuries were reported.

ABC15 helicopter footage showed first responders treating the man on a roof. He was carried down on a rescue board.

“We thank our parents for their sensitivity and patience as we vigilantly pursue student safety,” the school said in a statement to KTAR News 92.3 FM. “We prayerfully thank the Phoenix Police Department for their professional and sacrificial service to our community.”
