Mesa seeking volunteers to help count, interview homeless

PHOENIX — The city of Mesa is seeking volunteers to help count and gather information about its homeless population as part of a snapshot event in late January.

The 2020 Point In Time Homeless Street Count will take place on Jan. 28 from 5 a.m. to noon at certain project locations, the city said Monday in a press release.

The initiative is aimed at finding out how many people are experiencing homelessness in Mesa and how their needs can be better satisfied.

Volunteers will also conduct a brief survey to identify characteristics of those experiencing homelessness in Mesa.

The event is a requirement for the city since it receives federal funding for homeless assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and will be split up into small groups before heading out to conduct the interviews.

Mesa is also asking for donations to be distributed to those experiencing homelessness. The city has suggested items such as socks, combs, lip balm, tissues, hand warmers and waterless shampoo.

Donations will be accepted at the Mesa Housing and Community Development Office, located at 200 S. Center Street, until Jan. 22.

Volunteers can sign up to participate in the event on the city of Mesa’s website.
