Teen in critical condition after pushing 3 girls out of car’s way in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday after he pushed three children away from an oncoming car, Phoenix police said.

Police said the boy was walking with the light in a crosswalk with the girls, ages 12, 11 and 4, on Roeser Road at Central Avenue around 8:20 p.m.

A 20-year-old man driving a Dodge Challenger failed to yield and turned left into the crosswalk, according to police.

Police said the teenager saw the collision coming and pushed the girls out of the way before he was struck. One of the girls was still hit, but she was not injured.

The driver, who had a 20-year-old female passenger, told police he had not seen anyone in the crosswalk.

Police said impairment did not appear to be a factor.

No other details were immediately available.
