DPS trooper Tyler Edenhofer, 3 others honored with Medal of Valor

PHOENIX – Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper Tyler Edenhofer was one of four people to receive a Medal of Valor, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced on Monday.

Edenhofer was killed in the line of duty in July last year while responding to a call of a man throwing rocks on Interstate 10 in Avondale.

The suspect, Isaac King, fought with multiple responding officers when he got hold of another trooper’s weapon and fired two shots, one killing Edenhofer and the other injuring another trooper, DPS officials said at the time.

“Arizona’s brave first responders and members of law enforcement are heroes in every sense of the word,” Ducey said in a press release. “They put their lives on the line to keep us safe, and Arizona is grateful for their courage and heroism.”

“The Arizona Medal of Valor is just one way to express Arizona’s sincere gratitude to the honorees as well as all law enforcement personnel and first responders,” he added.

Fellow Department of Public Safety trooper Henry Roanhorse Jr. was also honored for pulling a driver out of a car on the train tracks while a train was quickly approaching.

Meanwhile, two officers were also awarded the Medal of Valor.

Tucson Police Department Officer Alvaro Silva immediately summoned medical attention for an injured suspect after an altercation.

Sgt. Joshua Wade of the Glendale Police Department saved an elderly man from a burning motorhome.

The honorees are selected by the Arizona Medal of Valor Review Board made up of Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board Chairman and Yavapai County Sheriff Scott Mascher, Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Col. Frank Milstead, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams, Timber Mesa Fire Chief Bryan Savage, Department of Forestry and Fire Management Director David Tenney and Governor Ducey’s Policy Advisor for Public Safety and Military Affairs Jenny Thomsen.

An award ceremony will be held next year to recognize the honorees.
