Navy Secretary announces warship will carry USS Arizona name

PHOENIX – A new Navy ship will be given the name USS Arizona for the first time in decades.

Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly announced Monday that a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine will carry the name USS Arizona.

“The commissioning of a new warship named Arizona honors our past—including those who have given their lives in service to our country—and our future and recognizes Arizona’s important contributions to our nation and its defense,” Gov. Doug Ducey said in a press release.

The new ship is the navy’s latest undersea warfare platform, which can house about 130 crewmembers.

The original USS Arizona was involved in the Dec. 7, 1941, attacks at Pearl Harbor where the ship was among four battleships to be sunk during the attacks.

The ship was deemed unsalvageable and remains at the bottom of Pearl Harbor where it is part of the National Park Service.
