4 injured in wrong-way wreck on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix

PHOENIX – A wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle on Interstate 17 outside of Phoenix, sending four people to the hospital late Sunday, authorities said.

Northbound lanes on a stretch of freeway between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point were closed for about two hours after the 10 p.m. wreck.

A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said the wrong-way driver had been going southbound for about 2 miles before the crash. The truck had smashed into an SUV carrying three people.

Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical treated the injured.

Our crews responded to yet another wrong way driver on I-17 NB near Bumble Bee Rd. There were multiple patients transported with very serious injuries.

Last week, a driver went 12 miles the wrong way on Loop 101 from Scottsdale to Tempe. He managed not to hit anyone during the 2 a.m. drive.

Earlier in November, a driver going the wrong direction on State Route 51 near Indian School Road crashed into a police car, injuring two Tempe officers.
