Lyft pulling plug on e-scooters in two East Valley cities this week

PHOENIX – Lyft is taking its electric scooters from the East Valley and going home.
The mobility company recently revealed plans to discontinue its e-scooter service in a handful of U.S. markets, including Scottsdale and Mesa.
A spokeswoman told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday service in the two Phoenix suburbs will end Friday.
“We look forward to continuing to provide riders with other modes of reliable transportation,” Darcy Yee, communications manager, said in an email.

Lyft debuted the e-scooters in Mesa and Scottsdale in February, rolling out about 300 of the two-wheeled devices in time for spring training baseball season.
TechCrunch reported last week that Lyft told employees it also was pulling its rentable scooters from Nashville, Tennessee; San Antonio; Atlanta; Dallas; and Columbus, Ohio.
“We’re choosing to focus on the markets where we can have the biggest impact,” a Lyft spokesperson told the website.
“We’re continuing to invest in growing our bike and scooter business but will shift resources away from smaller markets and toward bigger opportunities.”
Lyft was not among the three companies taking part in the city of Phoenix’s pilot program for e-scooters. Lime, Bird and Spin signed on for that six-month trial, which started in September.
