PHOENIX — The city of Surprise is offering residents a way to not only avoid clogging their drains with oil, but to also have it recycled into other products.

Residents can now dispose of yellow cooking oil at a facility in Fire Station 305’s parking lot, which opened Thursday at 15517 N. Parkview Place.

The oils will be processed and used to make biofuel, soaps, candles and other products, according to a city press release.

The facility is open 24/7 and is to be used only for kitchen oil — no motor oil is accepted.

Throughout the holidays, the city will also open temporary stations so people can get rid of oil used to fry turkeys.

According to the release, the city hopes the initiative will cut down on the cost of maintenance for city sewer lines and wastewater treatment infrastructure.

The move comes as Surprise has cut down on other types of recycling.

The city suspended its blue-bin recycling program on Aug. 19 due to increased costs.

There’s no estimated time for when the program will be restarted.
