Flags flying half-staff in Arizona to honor fallen Navajo sergeant

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags to fly half-staff on state buildings Tuesday to honor a Navajo Police sergeant who died on the job.

Sgt. Lamar Martin died Monday from a medical event he experienced while on duty Oct. 9, according to a press release.

Martin had worked for the Navajo Police Department for 22 years. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps and New Mexico Army National Guard.

“He was committed to the well-being of his community and nation, and put his life on the line to keep others safe,” Ducey said in the release.

“Our sincere condolences go out to Sgt. Martin’s loved ones as well as the entire Navajo Nation and Navajo Police Department.”

According to the department, Martin served as a defensive tactics instructor, a general instructor and a field training officer, among other roles.

Flags flew at half-staff last week to honor a Maricopa County detention officer who died Oct. 30 after being attacked by an inmate.
