Missing 1-ton boulder reappears in Prescott National Forest

PHOENIX — As if by the wave of a wand, the Wizard Rock in a northern Arizona forest has returned after it was reported missing several weeks ago.

“We are thrilled the Wizard Rock was returned, and are grateful that whoever took it was conscientious enough to give it back to the public” Sarah Clawson, ranger for Prescott National Forest’s Bradshaw Ranger District, said in a Friday press release.

“National Forests provide so many benefits to the American people, and when something like this happens, it highlights the intrinsic value of natural beauty in all its forms.”

Officials on Tuesday asked the public for information on the 1-ton boulder that had last been seen off Highway 89/White Spar Road.

Officials said they are considering relocating the black rock with white quartz streaks to a new spot, making it more visible to visitors.

Another boulder in the area remains unaccounted for, though.

One went missing west of Prescott on Dearing Road near Thumb Butte about four months ago.

It’s illegal to remove minerals from national forest land without a permit, and violators are subject to a fine of up to $5,000 and six months in jail.

Anybody with information about the missing boulders was asked to call U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement at 928-443-8110.
