Maricopa County board appoints Allister Adel as next top prosecutor

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has chosen Allister Adel as the county’s next top prosecutor.

Adel, the first woman to be named Maricopa County Attorney, replaces Bill Montgomery, who was appointed to the Arizona Supreme Court last month.

She was one of seven applicants for the position. Chief Deputy Rachel Mitchell, who had been temporarily filling the role, was on the list.

The other applicants were Lacy Cooper, Chris DeRose, Jon Eliason, Rodney Glassman, Gina Godbehere and John Kaites.

Adel thanked the board, her supporters and family on Twitter.

Bill Gates, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said he was proud of their choice.

“(Adel) is an excellent attorney, community leader, and experienced administrator,” he said.

Gov. Doug Ducey congratulated Adel on Twitter and said he looks forward to working with her.

Adel will serve out Montgomery’s term, which ends in January 2021.
